Fira is the capital of a Greek island called Santorini, located in the Aegean Sea and makes up part of the Cyclades. The island of Santorini is an extraordinary setting as it is actually the crater of a volcano. The town of Fira sits precariously on the edge of a cliff two hundred and sixty meters high up. To reach your Fira hotel, the transport of choice is a cable car but for a more traditional experience, why not climb the endless amount of steps up to town by donkey. Fira is a stunning location for a relaxing holiday, the houses are snow-white and blue-domed, the sea turquoise and the sands black, white and red, due to the volcanic substances on the island. The laid back atmosphere or Greece applies here also and the locals are welcoming.

Once you have set your bags down at a local Fira hotel, there are local foods to taste, beaches to explore and local shops to roam around. As Santorini is an island the most obvious attraction are the many beaches. The sands here are different to any other as they range from white sandy beaches to red pebbly beaches which are warm to walk on and feature a backdrop of bright red cliff side. Vourvolos and Monotjilos are nearest beaches to Fira. Monothilos beach is less crowded than others and good for families as it offers a football pitch, play area and basketball court. A more exciting beach is Perivolos, one of the more popular beaches. The sands here are an unusual shade of black and there are many water sports available including windsurfing and jet skiing. There are many shops nearby along with taverns and bars when the sun starts going down.

When visiting Santorini, you would be missing out if you didn't take a boat out to sea, to explore the other islands nearby. There are trips daily by ferry or smaller boats that take you to the other islands of Nea Kameni and Palia Kameni. Many people like to visit Palea Kameni for the hot springs here, thought to have beneficial properties due to the sulfur from the volcano. It is easy enough to book a boat trip out to the islands when in Fira and you can opt for a half day trip or a full day trip.

Fira also has an interesting museum about the history of the island, called the Museum of Prehistoric Thera, as Santorini used to be named. You will find the museum next to the metropolitan cathedral and it is open Tuesday through Sunday from early morning until mid-afternoon. The Museum of Prehistoric Thera is dedicated to showcasing interesting exhibits from ancient Greece, such as wall paintings, Neolithic pottery and Cycladic marble figurines. A ticket for this museum will also gain you entry to the Archaeological Museum, which displays impressive ancient vases and sculpture.

If after a relaxing day you are after a more upbeat evening, than Fira is the best town in Santorini for night life. There are many bars in the area and there are clubs that play more authentic Grecian sounds but if you are after a livelier atmosphere, then there a few great clubs Fira has to offer. Enigma features mainstream music, an adequate dance floor and an intriguing elevated lounge area. Mamourina is a bar that is constantly being upgraded and plays a mixture of traditional and mainstream music. This club is decorated well in bright colors. The most popular club though, has to be Koo, a well-known venue that features mainstream sounds and colorful cocktails.

If you book into your Fira hotel during the summer months, then chances are there will be one of the many annual festivals taking place. Santorini International Music Festival and the Ifaisteia are the main festivals and they both take place during August or September in the town of Fira. The music festival lasts for around two to three weeks and features mainly classical music such as piano recitals. The Ifaisteia Festival is an event to commemorate the volcanic eruption that shaped the island many years ago. The festival boasts traditional Grecian music and dancing along with local foods and wine. The highlight of the festival is a grand firework display to re-enact the explosion of the volcano.

It helps to know that although a traditional holiday venue, the majority of hotels in Fira offer free Wi-Fi and internet services. Also more than half feature an outdoor swimming pool, very useful in the midst of the summer months here.
